民進黨立法院黨團副書記長莊瑞雄表示，若總統府宣布由宋楚瑜擔任總統特使出席APEC會議，兩岸若因此融冰，不只民進黨樂見，全民都樂見。他進一步說，由宋楚瑜出任APEC特使向對岸釋出有三項重要訊息，第一，向對岸釋出善意推出對岸能夠接受的人選，相信宋楚瑜也能精確傳達總統蔡英文的意思；第二，不反中；第三，願與對岸不預設前提下交流，這也是人民的期待。
中國國民黨立法院黨團首席副書記長王育敏指出，宋楚瑜代表性稍嫌不足，過去馬總統時代都任命具財經背景、行政機關最高首長如曾任行政院長與副總統的連戰、蕭萬長，但宋楚瑜僅擔任省長且已廢省，代表性不足。
王育敏強調，由誰擔任總統特使也不是蔡總統說了算數，陸方對宋楚瑜擔任特使仍有意見，這項人事仍有變數。2016/9/7
